Compton History Book

My love of local history led to the acquisition of several wonderful collections: artefacts, postcards, letters, newspaper cuttings, old minutes from meetings, and written memories from past residents. These items (some are shown below) were given to me in the hope that they would be collated and published for future generations. More than 50 people have contributed to this book, which I see as a real collaborative effort. My job has been to take the many boxes of paraphernalia and create a book with context and flow that allows the information to be seen and shared by anyone with an interest.

One of the items was a book by Cecelia Lady Boston, who wrote an in-depth history of the village, largely concentrating on the manor houses, the church, and the distant past. A phenomenal amount of research went into this book, which provides the backbone for anyone with an interest in history to build upon.

In 1940, a past resident, Major Rudkin, collected old photographs and other memorabilia in an album. This, and the words that accompanied it (which were printed in The Times), along with the gratitude felt when so many people became involved, have provided the motivation for this project.

More recently, local historian, the late Michael Palmer created a collection that the Surrey History Centre would be delighted to have at their disposal. A significant proportion of the material used is from his collection, and it is in his memory that this book is written.
